12oz Japanese-inspired Raw Denim - 100% Recycled Cotton
This Japanese-inspired raw denim is really quite unique for home sewing and I couldn't resist stocking it. Make sure you read the description and care instructions below carefully as it will affect your finished garment.
The denim is unwashed. AFTER WASHING, THE CLOTH WILL LOOK DIFFERENT. PLEASE SEE PICTURE no 3 for the before and after washing shot. The denim has had one washing machine wash, for reference. The blue becomes much richer, more blue and even in tone across the cloth.
This denim is medium to heavy-weight (12oz) with a deep indigo colour. I recommend using a denim needle in your sewing machine for best results.
The fabric is made from 100% recycled cotton. Because of that, there is no statement contrast selvedge sadly. However the benefit of the recycled material is that there is minimal shrinkage. The fibres have already been shrunk in their previous life so you can expect it to be a stable cloth.
Shrink rate for this denim is: length - 3.3% and width - 1.8%.
You have a couple of options for washing, depending on what you are making and the effect you wish to achieve.
OPTION 1: Sew, then wash.
Make your garment first, and then wash. This is the option that most jeans brands will use as it will give your garment that authentic washed look after the garment is made. Eg. the seams etc will look darker, and there will be nuance to the cloth over time. BUT you must bear in mind the shrinkage and take it into account when making.
OPTION 2: Wash, then sew.
This method is the standard way of making a home-sewn garment. Wash your fabric first, and then sew your garment. This will mean your finished garment will be true to the pattern size. However you will lose a bit of the 'washed' look.
The denim can be washed at 40c. Do not use detergent during the first wash to maintain the authentic properties of the denim.
